What is Circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the foreskin, the skin covering the tip of the penis.

This procedure is commonly performed on newborns but can also be done on older children and adults. It is often carried out for a variety of reasons, including religious and cultural practices, medical indications, or personal preference.

Benefits of Circumcision

  • Improved Hygiene: Removing the foreskin makes it easier to keep the area clean, reducing the risk of infections.

  • Reduced Risk of Infections: Circumcision can lower the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and reduce the likelihood of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.

  • Prevention of Medical Conditions: It can prevent conditions such as phimosis (tight foreskin that cannot be retracted) and balanitis (inflammation of the glans).

  • Cancer Prevention: Circumcision has been associated with a reduced risk of penile cancer and a lower risk of cervical cancer in female partners.

The Circumcision Procedure

  1. Initial Consultation: Our urologists will conduct a thorough evaluation and discuss the procedure, benefits, risks, and post-operative care with the patient and/or guardians.

  2. Anesthesia: For infants, a local anesthetic or a topical numbing cream is typically used. Older children and adults may receive local or general anesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure.

  3. Surgical Technique: The foreskin is carefully removed using a scalpel or surgical scissors. The remaining skin is then stitched or sealed with surgical glue. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes.

  4. Post-Operative Care: After the procedure, patients are monitored briefly before being discharged. Detailed instructions on care and hygiene, pain management, and activity restrictions will be provided to ensure proper healing.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery

Recovery from circumcision is generally quick and uncomplicated. Patients may experience mild discomfort, swelling, or redness, which typically subsides within a few days. Proper post-operative care is crucial to prevent infection and ensure optimal healing. This includes:

  • Keeping the area clean and dry

  • Applying prescribed ointments or medications

  • Avoiding strenuous activities until fully healed

  • Following up with the doctor as recommended
