Transurethral Resection of the Prostate Surgery
TURP Surgery
Preeti Kidney Hospitals is proud to offer comprehensive and advanced treatments for various urological conditions. One of the specialized procedures we perform is Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), a gold-standard treatment for men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
What is TURP?
Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland.
This enlargement can obstruct the flow of urine, causing discomfort and urinary difficulties. TURP involves removing excess prostate tissue to relieve this obstruction and improve urinary function.

Benefits of TURP

-
Minimally Invasive: TURP is performed without any external incisions, reducing the risk of complications and promoting faster recovery.
-
Effective Symptom Relief: TURP provides significant and lasting relief from urinary symptoms caused by BPH, such as frequent urination, difficulty starting urination, and weak urine flow.
-
Quick Recovery: Most patients experience a quick return to normal activities, with a shorter hospital stay compared to open surgery.
-
High Success Rate: TURP is highly effective, with a proven track record of success in improving urinary function.
The TURP Procedure
-
Initial Assessment: Prior to the procedure, our experienced urologists will conduct a thorough evaluation, including a physical exam and diagnostic tests such as ultrasound or cystoscopy, to assess the size and condition of the prostate.
-
Anesthesia: TURP is performed under spinal or general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort.
-
Resection of Prostate Tissue: A resectoscope, a specialized instrument with a camera and an electric loop, is inserted through the urethra to the prostate. The electric loop is used to shave off excess prostate tissue that is causing the obstruction.
-
Irrigation and Removal: The removed tissue is flushed out using a sterile solution. A catheter is then temporarily placed to assist with urine drainage and ensure proper healing.
-
Post-Operative Care: After the procedure, patients are monitored in the recovery room. The catheter is usually removed after a couple of days, and patients are provided with detailed instructions for post-operative care and follow-up.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery
Recovery from TURP typically involves a short hospital stay of 1-2 days. Patients may experience mild discomfort, such as urinary frequency or urgency, which usually subsides within a few weeks. Our medical team will provide detailed post-operative care instructions, including guidelines on activity restrictions, hydration, and follow-up appointments to monitor recovery and ensure optimal outcomes.
