Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy Surgery
URSL Surgery
It is one of our specialized procedures is Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy (URSL), a highly effective and minimally invasive surgery designed to treat stones in the ureter and kidney.
What is URSL?
Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy (URSL) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat stones located in the ureter and the kidney. It involves the use of a ureteroscope, a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera and laser, which is inserted through the urethra and bladder to reach the stone.
The stone is then fragmented into smaller pieces using laser energy, allowing for easy removal or natural passage through the urinary tract.

Benefits of URSL

-
Minimally Invasive: URSL does not require any incisions, which significantly reduces the risk of complications and speeds up recovery.
-
High Success Rate: This procedure is highly effective for stones of various sizes and compositions, particularly those that are difficult to reach or resistant to other treatments.
-
Rapid Recovery: Patients typically experience a quicker return to normal activities compared to more invasive surgical options.
The URSL Procedure
-
Initial Assessment: Our urologists will conduct a comprehensive evaluation, including imaging studies such as X-rays or CT scans, to determine the size, location, and type of stones present.
-
Anesthesia: URSL is performed under general or spinal anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and safety.
-
Accessing the Stone: The ureteroscope is gently inserted through the urethra and advanced through the bladder and ureter to reach the stone.
-
Fragmenting the Stone: Once the stone is located, laser energy is used to break it into smaller, manageable pieces.
-
Stone Removal: The fragments are either removed with small baskets or allowed to pass naturally in the urine.
-
Post-Operative Care: After the procedure, patients are monitored for a short period before being discharged. Instructions for post-operative care, including pain management and activity guidelines, will be provided.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery
Recovery from URSL is typically swift, with most patients returning to normal activities within a few days. You may experience mild discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medications. It is important to follow our post-operative care instructions, which include staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activities for a short period, and attending follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery and ensure all stone fragments have passed.
